Frogs

Overview

Frogs is about a family living in a mansion in the swamp. It is strongly hinted that pesticide is causing the swamp animals to revolt, led by evil frogs, which are predominately toads. The frogtoads don’t do any killing. But direct other animals to kill humans. The frogs did get a chance to swarm the mansion, but it involved lots of frogs/toads getting thrown into the set. Must have been working on the movie. When the frogtoads did get the chance to attack Ray Miland, they chose to attack his butt. The cast of other animals directed by the frogtoads was large. Spiders, lizards, snakes, leeches, gators, and turtles all got to kill humans in creative ways. There was one scene I loved. Sam Elliot flagged down a lady driving with her son. After she agreed to his request for a ride, he ran to the fence, picked up his shotgun and ran back to the car carrying it. The driver took it all in stride instead of driving away with tires squealing like a normal human.

Cast

Ray Miland, Sam Elliot and Joan Van Arc with many minor actors.

Acting

The acting was across the board. Ray Miland is always good, but he did emote a bit. This was one of Sam Elliot’s first roles and he was enjoyable. The minor characters in the movie, the son and his wife were bad.

Screenplay/Dialog

The screenplay was good. The title was a bit misleading as toads were cast as frogs in many scenes and the frogtoads were ineffective killers. The dialog was spotty. At times, laughingly bad and other believable and entertaining.

Music/Soundtrack

OK, Nothing extraordinarily good or bad. Pretty good spooky songs when animals attacked.

Special Effects

Lots of stock footage of animals. Not to gory and probably suitable for tweeners. Frogtoads must be hard to train which was why many frogtoads entered the scene by being tossed off set. It didn’t look mean or unkind.

Entertainment Value

7 Stars. This is how well I liked the movie. The scores are 1 – 10. The score of 7 means I was entertained and could watch it again

American Exorcist

Overview

A paranormal investigator, Georgette, tries to discover why an office building has fatalities during the Christmas holidays.

The movie opens in a flash back with Georgette and her sister trying to exorcise a demon from a woman. During the dialogue we learn that the entire family has a history of exorcisms and Georgette is learning the ropes from her sister. Georgette doesn’t follow her sister’s advice and the demon breaks her sister’s neck. Current time has Georgette has Georgette accepting a job to find out why a series of awful events occur in the office building. The scene of the latest mishap involved a jealous wife coming to the Christmas party and shooting the employees. Georgette arrives at the building and meets the janitor that shows her around and gives her a walkie Talkie to communicate with him as he will stay in the building while working on maintenance items. We learn Georgette is now an atheist, presumably from her sister’s death by a demon. The evil entity makes itself known slowly and cuts off Georgettes trapped in the building and communication on her phone and walkie talkie. Georgette battles the evil entity through out the movie.

Cast

Joslyn Falon and Bill Mosely with some minor actors.

Acting

The acting was better than expected. Joslyn Falon was believable and Bill Mosely was wonderful.

Screenplay/Dialog

The screenplay was respectable. Lots of jump scares and creepy scenes worked. My favorite line was from the Xmas party murder scene, One employees walks into the main party and exclaiming “Your wife is here”. His hands drop and we see he has been shot. Georgette’s change from atheist to evil believer was subtle and a bit underplayed. The plot wore thin about 75% through the movie and I began to lose its captivating appeal. The final scene was a WTF and I’m not sure what the movie was trying to say

Music/Soundtrack

It was good. Creepy music and audible.

Special Effects

The Christmas party murder scene was gory and realistic. The demons were based on the original Exorcist theme and believable.

Entertainment Value

5 Stars. Worth watching once but not again
